Training Procedure.
There are two aspects to our training.
Firstly :
Regular
use of the Training equipment, to maintain familiarity with the equipment,
and procedures to operate it.
Using the two training dummies or mannequins, together with the training
A.E.D.s (Automatic Electronic Defibrillators), a number of scenarios can be
programmed, to test the Responder's skill. The Training Unit, which appears
almost identical to the Operational Unit, other than being a different
colour and not having any actual shock capability, interacts with the
Mannequin, and can alert the user to incorrect usage as well as pre
programmed situations.
A Typical
Training session, Responders
working on a Training Mannequin, the training AED (Red
and Grey box) can be seen behind the mannequin's head.
A resuscitation face mask is also in use.
Secondly :
Every 90 days, each Team member must re-qualify, in order to continue as an
Operational Ambulance First Responder. (Oxygen Therapy training is also now provided
by North East Ambulance personnel, requiring annual re-qualification.)
Like the Training Unit, the Operational AED Unit functions with recorded voice
prompts, effectively telling the Responder what action to take next, and
reporting on its functions. Great care must be taking when a "Shock" is
advised for the patient, to prevent anyone other that the patient being
affected by the high power electrical discharge. The Operational AED Unit is
NEVER used in a practice situation, other than for very careful awareness
training of the case and contents.
