NHS Direct or "999” Call ? NHS Direct Logo

Many of us are aware of the problems in contacting doctors outside of surgery hours. NHS Direct exists to offer medical advice on the more minor medical matters, which are not life threatening or serious. You may also be able to call the Doctors' Out Of Hours Service, if available in your area, but bear in mind that the "On Call" doctor may have to travel some distance to reach you. This may take some time.

The North East Ambulance Service will always advise -

Dial 999 immediately for emergencies such as:

Chest Pain
Difficulty in breathing
Loss of consciousness
Severe loss of blood
Choking
Fitting/convulsion
Severe allergic reactions
Road traffic accidents/collisions

This will ensure a prompt emergency response to the incident, and when appropriate, the activation of a local First Responder Scheme if available in that area.

IT SHOULD NOT NEED TO BE STATED, BUT IF IT IS CLEARLY NOT AN EMERGENCY, DO NOT DIAL 999 TO CALL AN AMBULANCE. SUCH CALLS WASTE THE RESOURCES OF THE SERVICE AND CAN RESULT IN A DELAYED RESPONSE TO AN ACTUAL LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. USE THE NHS DIRECT SERVICE FOR ADVICE ON MINOR MEDICAL ISSUES.
